Half Of My Heart

sweethummel—kurt:

The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and there was a nice winter chill in the wonderful air of Los Angeles that forced one Kurt Hummel to wear his sweater all day long, while he worked inside a small store front that didn’t have the heating installed yet. You see, after spending four years trying to get his fashion line going in New York, he had recently just secured some very wealthy sponsors, and was ready to expand to California. At first, he was hesitant about the idea, because he knew who lived in L.A., and he really wasn’t sure if he wanted to run into him or not, but after discussing it with his very sweet and charming boyfriend, Josh Sanders, the two had decided that more money coming in, and boosting Kurt’s career was a win no matter what. Of course, Josh didn’t like that Kurt would probably run into Blaine, but he had his ways of making sure his boyfriend’s eyes didn’t wander. Sure, they might have been a little unconventional at the best of times, but it didn’t mean Kurt loved him any less. Actually, the flight to Los Angeles was quite pleasant, and the two had no problem moving into their temporary apartment together.

Currently, said Kurt Hummel was leaving work for a little while, taking a late lunch break. They had already signed the lease, and made sure the building was theirs to play around with, and Kurt had flown in some employees the week before to start overseeing remodeling and different design aspects. But, of course, Kurt firmly believed that if you wanted something done right, you had to do it yourself, so he had gone to California to oversee things. Considering it was his line and his name, he couldn’t be too cautious. But all workaholics needed something to keep them going through the day, so Kurt had said goodbye to the girls and guys that were holding down the fort, and had gone for a little walk around the neighborhood.

Kurt hadn’t actually had time to explore his surroundings, so the last two days, his employees had gotten his coffee for him. While that was nice, and gave him an excuse to keep working (he loved his career, there was nothing he’d rather spend his time on), he had finally been lectured by Josh on the importance of having some time to himself, if even for a half an hour. So, Kurt decided that it was time to find places for himself. He passed quite a few boutiques during his walk, as well as a wonderful place that sold the most delicious little bagel sandwiches. Still, it took going down a couple streets to find the perfect little coffee shop. Not that walking was an issue; back in New York, when he was still friends with Blaine, they had had a lot of coffee dates. Well… not dates, because Kurt never called them that after Blaine cheated on him. They were just friendly little hang outs.

Walking into the shop, Kurt smiled at the aroma, taking in the scent of fresh brewed coffee, right out of the oven cakes, and a little something that could only be described as L.A. After ordering a Grande Nonfat Mocha, he had looked around, trying to figure out a place to sit, before his eyes fell upon him; Blaine Anderson. Kurt’s heart squeezed painfully in his chest, he felt like he couldn’t breathe, and he was very much considering leaving before he was noticed by his ex-boyfriend. Sure, they had ended on good terms, even though Blaine cheated on him. After a couple months, Kurt wanted to be his friend, and they tried really hard to make it work. And then, right when Kurt wanted to get back together, to propose, Blaine had left New York. Phone calls were done back and forth, text messages all the time, but… after a while, Kurt just started to forget to talk to Blaine. He was sure the same happened with the shorter male, considering Kurt never got anything from him either.

But there Blaine was, right in front of Kurt, sipping his no doubt medium drip, completely unaware that his high school and college sweetheart was in the same coffee shop as him. And why would he? As far as he knew, Kurt was still working on his career in New York. Taking a deep breath, Kurt nodded to himself. He had to do it… it was Blaine. He walked over to the table, smiling softly. “Is this seat taken?” He didn’t even wait for a response before sitting across from Blaine, his eyes lit up with love, passion, and awe.

Blaine was exhausted, and rightfully so for a number of different reasons. The main two? Work and his girlfriend. Between the countless hours he spent recording music or working at the studio on his next album and the time and energy it took to keep his extremely high-maintenance girlfriend happy and thoroughly busy, he was beyond worn-out. He wasn’t even sure how he managed to make it through the days with his usually fake chipper self and forced smile that he was honestly so used to it almost didn’t even feel unreal. But he cared about his girlfriend, even if she wanted to constantly be taken out to do things, and really the only times they were actually in their apartment were when they were sleeping together…which was almost far too often.

So waking up to his alarm clock was a downright nuisance, not to mention that he had already slept through it three times and now was on the verge of being an hour and a half late to the studio. But what was he supposed to do? Emma had wanted to go out an artist’s fair and he couldn’t just flat out say no, that he was tired and for once he just wanted to get some sleep. So, like the half-ass boyfriend he was, right after he had returned from the studio he let his girlfriend drag him to the event which required a sort of casual-formal dress. Honestly he wasn’t even trying to be good because of the usual “award” he knew he’d get, he simply just wanted to get it over with so he could head back to the apartment and maybe fall asleep being kept up all night. But of course, as always, he had been wrong.

It wasn’t until an hour later, after he had pried himself from his girlfriend’s still clothless form, showered, and gotten dressed, that he had finally pulled up to the studio to start his usual day of work. Really he didn’t do much out of the ordinary. He sat at the piano working through some ideas he had going through his mind, brainstormed on lyrics as he waited for the producer to arrive, played around with a couple strumming chords, and tried to catch a nap on one of the sofas in the waiting room whenever he had a chance. When his producer finally arrived a couple hours later they got right to work, recording and trying out a couple songs he had been thinking of and fixing. He almost found it ironic how different his music had become over the years. In college his songs had all been joyous and about falling in love, being with that special someone, and overall just living an amazingly elated life. But now? After he had broken up with Kurt everything had gone down hill, his piano and guitar melodies had grown slower and blue with lyrics that were more solemn even with his less upsetting songs. It was amazing to him how nobody in the entirety of Los Angeles was able to see right through his seemingly happy facade and hear nothing but the depression in his music.

Blaine eventually was able to take his usual break after what seemed the longest four or five hours of this entire past week. But nonetheless he strapped himself into his car and headed straight for the same coffee shop he attended every single day since he had moved to L.A. The barista even new his coffee order and had it waiting for him when he rolled in at usual time. Taking the same spot he always took when he frequented the cafe he tried to make himself comfortable as he sipped at his coffee and looked over the half dozen text messages he had, most of which were from Emma. Blaine sighed just thinking about it. He wasn’t happy, not even close, in fact he was pretty miserable and probably even clinically depressed for the most part. But there wasn’t anything he could do. His past was gone and the one man he had loved more then anything wasn’t in his life anymore…or so he thought. “Hmm?” he murmured, half in a daze as he finally put his cup back down on the table to notice a figure slip into the seat across from him. Blaine’s face automatically brightened an enormous amount, and his lips pulled into the most naturally genuine smile that he could possibly muster at the mere sight of him. But then he remembered that this wasn’t New York, and that they still weren’t on all that great of terms which meant he had to tread lightly. “Kurt…what’re you doing here?”
